Hintergrund zu US Conflict Minerals:
Das Wall_Street_Reformgesetz „Dodd_Frank Act“ (Abschnitt 1502) aus dem Jahr 2010 besagt, dass in den USA börsennotierte Unternehmen jedes Jahr über die Verwendung von sogenannten Konfliktmineralien an die Börsenaufsichtsbehörde berichten müssen. Als Konfliktmineralien werden Erze zur Gewinnung von Zinn, Tantal, Wolfram und Gold bezeichnet, die aus der im Gesetz beschriebenen Konfliktzone Demokratische Republik Kongo und der angrenzenden Gebiete stammen. Durch die Offenlegung der Herkunft der Konfliktmineralien soll die Finanzierung kongolesischer Milizen minimiert und Konflikte sowie Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit verhindert werden. Eine vergleichbare europäische Konfliktmineralien Verordnung soll noch in diesem Jahr in Kraft treten.
Hintergrund zu Kobalt:
Die Demokratische Republik Kongo (DRK) ist der weltweit größte Kobaltproduzent und hält mehr als 50 Prozent der weltweiten Kobaltreserven. Kobalt wird in Lithium-Ionen-Batterien verwendet, die ein integraler Bestandteil von Elektroautos, Mobiltelefonen und Laptops sind. Es wird erwartet, dass die Nachfrage nach Kobalt in den kommenden Jahren deutlich steigen wird. Kobalt wird im mechanisierten und handwerklichen Bergbau gewonnen. Jüngste Berichte haben die Besorgnis über unsichere Arbeitsbedingungen und Kinderarbeit im handwerklichen Kobaltbergbau deutlich gemacht. Anfang 2017 richteten die RMI-Mitglieder eine Arbeitsgruppe ein, die sich auf die verantwortungsvolle Beschaffung von Kobalt und insbesondere auf Risiken im Zusammenhang mit Kinderarbeit im Kobaltbergbau in der DRK konzentrierte. Über die Arbeitsgruppe arbeiten Unternehmen daran, die Transparenz in den Kobalt-Lieferketten zu erhöhen und mit Akteuren der Lieferkette zusammenzuarbeiten, um die verantwortungsvolle Beschaffung dieses Minerals zu fördern.

Background to US Conflict Minerals:
The Wall_Street_Reform Act „Dodd_Frank Act“ (section 1502) from 2010 states that in the US listed companies must report to the stock exchange authorities every year about the use of so-called conflict minerals. Conflict minerals are ores for the production of tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold, which are derived from the conflict zone Democratic Republic of the Congo and the adjacent areas described in the law. By revealing the origin of conflict minerals, the financing of Congolese militia is to be minimized and conflicts and crimes against humanity are to be prevented.
Background to Cobalt Reporting:
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is the world’s largest producer of cobalt and holds more than 50 percent of the global cobalt reserves. Cobalt is used in lithium-ion batteries that form an integral part of electric automobiles, mobile phones and laptop computers. Demand for cobalt is expected to rise significantly over the coming years. Cobalt is extracted in mechanized and artisanal mining operations. Recent reports have highlighted concerns over unsafe working conditions and child labor in artisanal cobalt mining. In early 2017, RMI members established a workgroup focused on the responsible sourcing of cobalt and in particular risks related to instances of child labor in cobalt mining in the DRC. Through the workgroup, companies are working to increase transparency in cobalt supply chains and engage with supply chain actors to promote the responsible sourcing of this mineral.
